About the Other Food Index

Explanation of the Other Food Index

The Other Food Index is an economic indicator that measures price fluctuations in diverse food products beyond major staples—such as cereals, vegetables, fruits, seasonings, and beverages—included in the food category of the Consumer Price Index (CPI). With 2010 set as the base year and valued at 100, price changes are indexed to track price trends over time.

There are multiple reasons why this indicator is important. First, food products are essential commodities that directly relate to consumer living costs and are an important element reflecting the reality of inflation. Second, since other food items are routinely purchased by most consumers, they demonstrate price movements close to actual consumer experience. Third, as these items are influenced by multiple economic factors—agricultural production, import trends, exchange rates, and energy costs—they serve as clues to diagnosing the overall economic situation.

As a general trend, the Other Food Index is significantly affected by international agricultural commodity price fluctuations, domestic agricultural environment, distribution costs, and supply-demand balance. Recently, multiple factors such as production fluctuations from climate change, increased transport and production costs from energy price increases, and rising import prices due to yen depreciation have tended to push the index upward. Notable points are that this index exhibits higher volatility than other price indices and possesses seasonality. Additionally, since food price increases have direct effects on consumer sentiment and household spending, the index is closely watched by policy authorities and market participants.
