CSVOn the Population Composition of the Republic of the Congo
Commentary on the Population Pyramid of the Republic of the Congo
The Republic of the Congo is a country exhibiting a typical "youth-type population structure." The population pyramid has an extremely broad base and narrows rapidly toward the top, forming a triangle, with the young population under 15 years of age accounting for approximately 45% of the total. While this is a general characteristic of sub-Saharan Africa, this trend is particularly pronounced in the Republic of the Congo.
In terms of demographic dynamics, the high birth rate (approximately 4-5 children per woman) combined with improving mortality rates maintains a high annual population growth rate exceeding 3%. Simultaneously, infant mortality rates and maternal mortality rates remain high, reflecting healthcare infrastructure challenges. The country is in the early stages of a "demographic dividend period," where the rising proportion of the working-age population presents potential economic growth opportunities.
However, the country faces significant socioeconomic challenges. Educational facilities and employment opportunities are extremely insufficient for the enormous youth population, with rising unemployment rates and educational access disparities being serious issues. Additionally, weak healthcare, nutrition, and public health infrastructure impedes the qualitative development of the population. How the country can convert this population increase into sustainable development in the future will be an important challenge for the Republic of the Congo.
