Population Composition of Belarus

Population Pyramid and Demographic Trends of Belarus

Belarus's population composition exhibits characteristics of a "transition from mature to aging" phase. The shape of the pyramid shows an inverted pyramid form with a relatively thick middle-aged layer (40s-60s) that rapidly narrows toward younger age groups, clearly demonstrating the structure of a typical low-birth-rate, aging society. A notable feature is that while the proportion of working-age population (15-64 years) remains high, the proportion of child population (0-14 years) has significantly declined.

As a demographic trend, Belarus shows a marked decline in birth rates, with the total fertility rate falling well below the global average. The economic crisis of the 1990s and subsequent social changes are believed to be factors that accelerated the decline in births. Simultaneously, rising life expectancy has resulted in a steady increase in the elderly population (65 years and over), placing the country in a typical "low birth rate and aging" phase. The demographic dividend period has already ended, and the country has entered a phase of declining working-age population.

This population structure brings multifaceted challenges to society and economy. There are risks of economic growth stagnation due to labor shortages, increased burden on pension and healthcare systems, and growing necessity for immigration policies. Additionally, outward migration of youth is also a concern, with deeper worries about intensifying population decline pressures. Strengthening government family support policies and birth incentive programs has become an urgent policy priority.
