Belgium's Population Composition

Belgium's population pyramid and demographic dynamics

Belgium's population composition exhibits the characteristics of an "aging-type" mature population pyramid. The pyramid's shape is narrow at the base, with a relatively wide structure from the middle to upper sections, reflecting the typical demographic pattern of advanced European nations.

The most significant characteristic is the progression of declining birthrates and aging populations. Due to declining fertility rates and increasing life expectancy, the elderly population aged 65 and above accounts for approximately 18-19% of the total population. Meanwhile, the proportion of youth under 15 years old has declined significantly to approximately 17%, with the proportion of working-age population (15-64 years) relatively shrinking.

This population composition creates multiple challenges for society and the economy. First, financial burdens on the public pension system and health insurance are increasing, with insurance premium burdens on the working population growing heavier. Second, concerns about labor shortages are rising across various sectors, with personnel recruitment becoming an issue particularly in industries such as elder care, healthcare, and construction. Third, aging consumption patterns are expected to slow economic growth rates.

To address these challenges, Belgium is implementing policies such as immigration acceptance, extending retirement age, and utilizing female labor forces.
