Burundi's Population Composition

Burundi's population pyramid and demographic characteristics

Burundi is a Sub-Saharan African country exhibiting a typical "young-type population structure." The pyramid has an extremely wide base that narrows rapidly toward the top, forming a triangle shape, with approximately 45% of the total population under 15 years old, representing an extremely young population composition. Meanwhile, the elderly population aged 65 and above comprises fewer than 3%, making them a very small minority.

This structure is shaped by continued high fertility rates (approximately 6 children per woman) and improving but still elevated infant mortality rates. Burundi is currently in a phase of rapid population increase, with the population expanding at an annual natural increase rate exceeding 3%. Over the coming decades, a continuous influx of youth into the labor market is expected, with the "demographic dividend" phase anticipated to continue.

However, this demographic trend brings serious socioeconomic challenges. Educational and employment opportunities are severely insufficient for the vast youth population, raising concerns about rising unemployment and expanding poverty. Additionally, under limited healthcare resources, maternal mortality rates and infectious disease control remain critical issues. Furthermore, land resource depletion and food supply constraints accompanying population growth are factors hindering long-term development. The lack of social infrastructure due to rapid urbanization is also emerging as a serious problem.
