CSVAzerbaijan's Population Composition
Explanation of Azerbaijan's population pyramid
Azerbaijan exhibits a typical "young-type population composition." The pyramid has a wide base, with the population under 15 years old accounting for approximately 23-25% of the total. In contrast, the elderly population aged 65 and above is relatively low at approximately 7-8%, with the working-age population (15-64 years) comprising approximately 67-70%, creating a relatively balanced composition.
This population composition is the result of historically high fertility rates and improved infant survival rates. However, following the conflicts of the 1990s and increasing urbanization and educational improvements since the 2000s, fertility rates have shown a gradual declining trend. Women's participation in society and rising educational levels have influenced family planning decisions.
In terms of demographic dynamics, Azerbaijan is considered to be in a "demographic dividend period." With a high proportion of working-age population, there is significant potential for economic growth and abundant labor supply. However, simultaneously, ensuring adequate educational and employment opportunities for the large youth population has become urgent.
Regarding social and economic impacts, economic acceleration is expected through an abundant workforce, but there is a need to address rising unemployment rates and outmigration of youth. As declining birthrates and aging progress in the future, the construction of long-term social security and pension systems will become an important issue.
