On Afghanistan's Population Composition and Demographic Dynamics
Afghanistan's population pyramid exhibits a typical "youth-type" structure, characterized by an extremely young population composition. The population under 15 years old accounts for over 40% of the total, while those aged 65 and above remain below 5%. This structure reflects the results of high birth rates and relatively low life expectancy.
Currently, the country is in the initial stage of a "demographic dividend period." The proportion of working-age population is high, and with appropriate policies and investments, there is potential for economic growth opportunities. However, simultaneously, rapid population growth is expected to continue, with projections indicating that the population could double by 2050.
Socially, providing educational opportunities for the rapidly growing youth population is an urgent priority. In particular, expansion of female education and creation of employment opportunities are essential. Economically, industrial development and job creation capable of absorbing the massive new labor force are indispensable. Investment demand in healthcare and infrastructure is also surging. On the other hand, political instability and severe poverty are pressing issues, requiring institutional reforms and international support to leverage the demographic dividend.
