About Japan LNG

About the Japan LNG Index

The Japan LNG Index is an economic indicator that shows the spot market price of liquefied natural gas (LNG) imported by Japan. The unit is expressed in dollars per mmBtu (million BTU), and it functions as a representative indicator of Japan's major energy import prices. This price is calculated from spot transaction prices of LNG arriving at Japanese ports, representing a dynamic price indicator that reflects short-term market supply and demand.

There are several reasons why this index is important. First, Japan depends on imports for the majority of its energy resources, and LNG is a crucial element for electricity supply and stable energy provision. Following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, with the shutdown of nuclear power plants, LNG import volumes increased significantly, so price trends directly impact energy costs for Japanese households and businesses. Second, as LNG prices reflect international oil market conditions and supply-demand balance in the Asia-Pacific region, they serve as an indicator of global energy market conditions.

As a general trend, Japan LNG prices show strong correlation with international crude oil prices and exchange rates, and are significantly influenced by US shale gas production, geopolitical risks such as Middle East situations, and demand fluctuations due to economic growth across the Asian region. In 2022, LNG prices rose to historic highs due to the energy crisis caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Notable points include seasonal variations (increased winter demand), production conditions in supplying countries, and how future decarbonization policies will determine long-term price trends.
