About the Non-energy Index
# Explanation of the Non-energy Index
The Non-energy Index is an indicator that comprehensively measures economic activity across all industrial sectors except the energy industry. Expressed as an index with 2010 as the base year (100), it allows us to understand how much the level of economic activity has changed since then. This indicator includes all economic activities outside the energy industry, including manufacturing, services, construction, and agriculture.
There are multiple reasons why this indicator is important. First, the energy industry experiences volatile price fluctuations and is strongly influenced by international commodity markets, so by excluding it, we can more accurately capture the true movement of the real economy. Second, it serves as a tool for more comprehensively understanding overall national economic growth and supports decision-making by policymakers and investors. Third, in modern economies where industrial diversification is advancing, monitoring how non-energy sectors are growing is essential for evaluating the qualitative development of the economy.
Generally, as advanced economies mature, the proportion of the non-energy sector tends to increase. In particular, growth in the service sector and high-tech industries is remarkable. Notable points include movements during business cycle phases, growth disparities between industries, and rising patterns of indices indicating improved labor productivity. This information is utilized in measuring the effectiveness of economic policies and formulating medium-term economic outlooks.
