BLS JOLTS Hiring Rate

Regarding BLS JOLTS Hiring Rate

The BLS JOLTS hiring rate is an indicator derived from the "Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey" published monthly by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), representing the ratio of new hires at private companies and government agencies to total employment. This indicator measures the degree to which companies are actively hiring talent and is an important labor market indicator.

There are multiple reasons why this indicator is considered important. First, the hiring rate directly reflects the vibrancy of the labor market, making it essential for understanding overall economic business cycles. When hiring increases, it indicates that companies are expecting growth; when hiring decreases, it suggests economic slowdown or heightened uncertainty. Furthermore, compared to traditional indicators such as the unemployment rate, it can capture labor market movements more sensitively, and therefore has a significant impact on monetary policy decisions by the central bank.

As a general trend, the hiring rate tends to rise during periods of strong economic performance and decline during economic recessions. During the 2020 coronavirus crisis, the hiring rate plummeted, but maintained high levels during the subsequent recovery process. As a notable point, because the hiring rate and unemployment rate have a close relationship, it is important to analyze both trends in parallel. Additionally, differences in hiring rates across industries are useful information for understanding structural changes in the economy.
