Economic Overview of Peru

Peru Economic Profile

Peru is a major economic country in Latin America and one of South America's principal mineral resource nations. As an upper-middle-income country with a nominal GDP of approximately $450 billion (2023 estimate) and a population of around 34 million, Peru has a diversified economy. Mining, agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing are the primary industries. Mineral resources such as copper, gold, and zinc are the pillars supporting Peru's economy, accounting for over 60% of exports.

Recent economic developments are marked by challenges stemming from political instability. Social unrest and political crises continuing since 2022 have resulted in rising inflation rates (approximately 8% in 2023) and reduced investment. However, solid mineral prices have had a positive effect on the economy, with strong international demand for copper supported by the development of the electric vehicle industry. The tourism industry also shows recovery trends, boasting world-renowned sites such as Machu Picchu.

Notable points include the necessity for political reform and institutional improvements. Combating corruption and strengthening democratic governance are important challenges for economic growth. Additionally, modernization and value-added development of the agricultural sector, as well as productivity improvements through digitalization, are urgent priorities. Furthermore, climate change measures and water resource management threaten agricultural sustainability in the Andes region, requiring responses toward sustainable development.
