Economic Overview of North Macedonia

# Economic Profile of North Macedonia

North Macedonia is a small upper-middle-income country located on the Balkan Peninsula with a nominal GDP of approximately $16.5 billion in 2021 and a population of about 2.06 million. The country's economy is supported by manufacturing, agriculture, mining, and services sectors, with the textile and apparel industry and steel industry being particularly important. Abundant mineral resources, especially the extraction of zinc and nickel, are also crucial pillars of the economy, with mineral exports to European countries serving as a major source of foreign exchange.

Recent economic trends show that ambitious moves toward EU and NATO membership have become driving forces for economic reform. Following the country name change in 2019, improved relations with Greece have eased international isolation, and increased foreign direct investment is expected. However, economic growth rates have shown volatility due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and geopolitical tensions from the Ukraine crisis in 2022, with the economy facing inflationary pressures and supply chain disruptions. Recent growth rates have hovered around 2-3%, but addressing structural challenges is urgent.

Notable points include the persistently high unemployment rate among youth and continuing brain drain (diaspora). Additionally, progress in anti-corruption measures and judicial reform are important indicators directly linked to EU integration advancement. Furthermore, low energy self-sufficiency and dependence on neighboring countries indicate vulnerability to regional changes, with investment in renewable energy transitions progressing rapidly. External debt management and fiscal discipline maintenance remain challenges in achieving medium-term stable growth.
