Economic Profile of Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia is an island nation located in the Windward Islands in the eastern Caribbean, with a small-scale economy of approximately 180,000 people. With a per capita GDP of approximately $9,500, it is classified as an upper-middle-income country in the region. Although the economic scale is limited, it possesses a mature economic structure centered on the tourism industry.

The primary industries of the economy are tourism and the hotel and restaurant sectors, accounting for approximately 25-30% of GDP. Approximately 300,000 tourists visit annually, making tourism an important source of foreign exchange. The export of agricultural products such as bananas has traditionally been important, but the weight of agriculture has declined in recent years to approximately 5% of GDP. Financial services, real estate, and construction also serve as important sectors supporting the economy.

Regarding recent economic trends, the COVID-19 pandemic caused serious impacts through a sharp decline in tourist arrivals. The economy contracted during 2020-2021, but growth has accelerated from 2022 onward as tourism recovered. Rising inflationary pressures are a matter of concern, with increases in energy and food prices pressuring both households and businesses. Unemployment rates remain in double digits, with youth employment being a particular challenge.

As a notable point, Saint Lucia's economy is extremely vulnerable to external shocks. High tourism dependency means it is significantly affected by fluctuations in external demand, and climate change and hurricane risks also exist. Debt levels are relatively high, and the sustainability of public finances is a concern. On the other hand, efforts toward economic diversification are underway, including renewable energy development and investment in the digital economy, and strengthening the long-term economic foundation remains an important issue.
