Laos Economic Profile

The Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) is a lower-middle-income country located in the Mekong River region of Southeast Asia. With a population of approximately 7.3 million and facing geographic constraints as a landlocked nation, it is advancing regional economic integration. The economy is relatively small-scale in Southeast Asia with a GDP of approximately $20 billion.

Agriculture forms the main pillar of the economic structure, with approximately 70% of the working population engaged in agricultural activities. Grain production, including rice and corn, provides the foundation and plays an important role in food security. Simultaneously, abundant mineral resources, including copper and tin mining, function as sources of foreign exchange. In recent years, hydropower development has progressed, with power exports to Thailand and Vietnam becoming an important revenue source for Laos, growing into an industry accounting for approximately 8% of GDP.

The tourism industry is also developing rapidly, with foreign tourists attracted to ancient cities such as Luang Prabang and natural landscapes. However, the COVID-19 pandemic's reduction in tourist numbers dealt a significant blow to the economy.

Regarding recent economic trends, investment from China has surged, with economic corridor development and infrastructure construction advancing. The opening of the China-Laos Railway is particularly symbolic, contributing to improved regional connectivity. However, this increased dependence on China has led to rising foreign debt, reaching concerning levels relative to GDP as of 2023.

Notable challenges include poverty reduction progress and the necessity for structural economic reforms. Efficiency improvements in state-owned enterprises, financial sector development, and enhanced human capital investment are essential for sustainable growth. Additionally, adaptation to climate change is urgent, with Mekong River basin water resource management becoming the key to regional cooperation. How effectively Laos can maximize benefits from regional economic integration (ASEAN, RCEP) will be an important factor determining its future development.
