OECD Passenger Car Registration Index

OECD Passenger Car Registration Index

The OECD Passenger Car Registration Index is an economic indicator that indexes the number of new passenger car registrations in member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Using 2015 as the base year (100), it tracks changes in registration numbers thereafter. This indicator was developed to comprehensively understand the size and trends of the automobile market across all OECD member countries.

The number of passenger car registrations functions as an important leading indicator of economic activity. Changes in new registration numbers reflect consumers' purchasing intentions, corporate capital investment trends, and the situation in financial markets. During periods of strong economic performance, passenger car purchases increase and the index rises. Conversely, during periods of economic slowdown, registration numbers decrease and the index tends to decline. Therefore, this indicator is widely used as a basis for judging economic trends.

A particularly notable trend is that the index declined significantly during the 2008 global financial crisis, reflecting the subsequent recovery process. In recent years, structural changes in the market have been observed, including accelerated transition to electric vehicles and strengthened environmental regulations. Additionally, the decline and recovery caused by the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, as well as fluctuations due to supply chain issues, have influenced index movements in various ways.

Since the automobile industry is the core of manufacturing in OECD countries and has significant impacts on employment and investment, movements in this indicator serve as important benchmarks for policymakers and investors.
