OECD Household Economic Outlook Diffusion Index
About the OECD Household Economic Outlook Diffusion Index (DI)
The OECD Household Economic Outlook Diffusion Index (DI) is an indicator that measures what kind of outlook households in OECD member countries hold regarding future economic conditions. Based on surveys of households, it is calculated by subtracting the proportion of people expecting economic deterioration from those expecting improvement, expressed in units of Balance. Positive values indicate that optimistic outlooks are dominant, while negative values indicate that pessimistic outlooks are dominant.
The importance of this indicator lies in the fact that consumer psychology tends to lead overall economic trends. When household economic outlook improves, it may lead to increased consumer spending and more active investment activities; conversely, when it deteriorates, it brings stronger savings orientation and reduced consumption. In other words, this DI functions as a leading indicator that precedes actual economic movements, serving as important information for policymakers and business executives in their decision-making.
Generally, the household outlook DI tends to maintain positive values during economic expansion phases and turns negative during recession phases. A particularly important point to note is not just the absolute level of the DI, but the trend of its changes. A sharp rise indicates strengthening optimistic sentiment, while a sharp decline suggests deepening economic concerns. During major shocks such as financial crises or pandemics, this DI tends to decline rapidly. Additionally, analyzing the interrelationship with other economic indicators such as inflation rates and unemployment rate changes is an important perspective in analysis.
