On Cambodia's Population Composition

Cambodia's Population Pyramid and Demographic Trends

Cambodia exhibits a typical young-type population composition, with approximately 40% of the total population consisting of children under 15 years of age. This characteristic stems from continued high birth rates during the recovery process from the mass atrocities of the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s. The pyramid shape has a broad base that narrows rapidly toward the top, reflecting typical demographic dynamics of developing countries.

Currently, Cambodia is in the "demographic bonus" period. The working-age population (15-64 years) is increasing rapidly, and the dependency ratio is declining—a golden period. This period presents an opportunity for economic growth, and with appropriate policies, productivity improvement and economic development are expected. Meanwhile, the birth rate shows a gradually declining trend, and population composition is predicted to mature in the future.

The impacts on Cambodian society and economy are extremely significant. The massive young labor force is advantageous for manufacturing and agricultural development, while improvements in education and employment opportunities are urgent priorities. Additionally, with the spread of family planning, declining fertility is likely in the next generation, and the construction of long-term social security systems also presents challenges. How Cambodia responds to future demographic changes will significantly influence the nation's sustainable development.
