On Croatia's Population Composition

Croatia's Population Pyramid and Demographic Trends

Croatia's population composition exhibits a typical aging-type pyramid, strongly reflecting characteristics of European developed countries. While the working-age population (15-64 years) accounts for approximately 65% of the total, the elderly population (65 years and above) reaches nearly 20%, indicating advanced population aging. In particular, the proportion of youth (0-14 years) is extremely low at around 15%, suggesting serious decline in birth rates.

Demographic trends show that Croatia is in a long-term population decline phase. Following the impact of the 1990s Yugoslav Wars and the subsequent economic transition period, emigration of young people has continued. In particular, population outflow has accelerated since EU accession, and combined with declining birth rates, natural decrease has become pronounced. This trend means the nation has completely passed the demographic bonus stage and entered the demographic onus phase.

Such changes in population structure bring serious challenges to Croatian society and economy. Labor shortages, increased burden on pension and health insurance systems, and regional economic decline are major issues. Additionally, the outflow of highly educated talent weakens national competitiveness. Sustaining economic growth and maintaining the social security system require urgent implementation of policies to increase birth rates and reform immigration policies.
