On the Population Composition of Costa Rica

Explanation of Costa Rica's Population Pyramid

Costa Rica's population composition exhibits relatively balanced "mature-type" characteristics when compared to other Latin American countries. The pyramid shape shows that while the proportion of young people remains relatively high, the upper portion gradually narrows, displaying typical characteristics of a developing country in transition toward developed status.

In terms of demographic dynamics, Costa Rica is a country that experienced demographic transition relatively early in the Central American region. The birth rate has declined significantly over the past several decades, while life expectancy has increased, and a gradual trend toward fewer children and an aging society is progressing. From the high birth rates of the 1970s and 1980s, the birth rate has now declined to around 2.0, and the population growth rate has slowed. However, aging is not occurring as rapidly as in Japan or Europe.

Regarding socioeconomic impacts, Costa Rica is currently in the final stages of the "demographic dividend." While the proportion of the working population remains high and economic growth opportunities exist, a full-fledged transition to an aging society is anticipated over the next 10-20 years. This will create challenges including increased burden on pension and healthcare systems and the need to adapt to structural changes in the labor market. Investment in education and strengthening of human capital will be important for sustained economic development.
