Botswana's Population Composition

Botswana's Population Pyramid and Demographic Trends

Botswana's population pyramid exhibits a typical "young-type" structure, with children aged 0-14 comprising approximately 30% of the total population. The composition is characterized by working-age population (15-64 years) at approximately 65% and elderly (65 years and over) at only about 5%. Such a shape is common to many countries in sub-Saharan Africa and reflects a population structure brought about by high fertility rates and low life expectancy.

From the 1990s through the early 2000s, the rapid expansion of HIV/AIDS infections in Botswana had serious impacts on demographic trends. This resulted in a dramatic decline in life expectancy and an increase in deaths among the working-age population. However, the situation has since improved through medical technological advances and prevention activities, and the country now maintains relatively stable fertility and mortality rates.

In social and economic terms, while there is a "demographic dividend" opportunity due to abundant young labor, demand for education, employment, and healthcare services is surging. The government must support a large youth population with limited resources, and rising unemployment rates are also an issue. For Botswana to achieve sustained economic growth, effective utilization of the demographic dividend through human resource development and job creation is essential.
