Population Composition of Bangladesh

Population pyramid and demographic trends in Bangladesh

Bangladesh exhibits a typical "youth-heavy" population pyramid, with children aged 0-14 constituting approximately 26-28% of the total population. The broad base of the pyramid that gradually narrows toward the top reflects the persistently high birth rate. Meanwhile, the elderly population aged 65 and above remains at only 5-7%, with aging still in its early stages compared to developed nations.

From a demographic perspective, Bangladesh is currently in the "demographic dividend period." As birth rates have declined over the past several decades, the working-age population (15-64 years) has gradually increased, with this proportion expected to peak between the 2020s and 2040s. Simultaneously, the downward trend in birth rates continues, with the potential for accelerated aging in the future.

Such population composition has significant impacts on society and the economy. Abundant labor supply presents opportunities for economic growth and industrial development, and Bangladesh's textile industry has indeed benefited from these demographic trends. However, addressing challenges such as job creation, educational facilities, and healthcare services is urgent, making policy-driven investment critical for capitalizing on the demographic dividend.
