About the Raw Materials Index

About the Raw Materials Index

The Raw Materials Index is an economic indicator showing price trends of major raw materials traded in international markets. This index tracks price fluctuations in a variety of raw materials that form the foundation of the global economy, including energy resources such as oil and gas, metals such as copper and aluminum, and agricultural products such as wheat and corn. The index is calculated using 2010 as the base year (100) and shows how the current level has changed compared to this base year.

There are multiple reasons why this indicator is important. First, raw material prices are directly tied to the cost structure of many industries, including manufacturing and energy sectors, and function as a leading indicator of inflation. When raw material prices rise, there is a tendency for this to eventually be reflected in price increases for goods and services purchased by consumers. Second, raw material prices have a close relationship with economic growth in raw material-exporting countries, including developing nations, reflecting global economic trends. Third, for investors, they serve as important criteria for asset allocation and risk management decisions.

As a general trend, the Raw Materials Index tends to move in line with the business cycle, rising due to increased demand during economic expansion periods and falling during recessions. Geopolitical risks, weather variations, and currency fluctuations also serve as significant influencing factors. In recent years, new points of attention have emerged, including structural changes in energy demand accompanying the transition to decarbonization and a sharp surge in demand for specific metals as electric vehicles become more prevalent. Continuous monitoring of this indicator is essential for economic outlooks and investment decisions.
