About the Oils & Meals Index
Explanation of the Oils & Meals Index
The Oils & Meals Index is one of the components of the food price index published by the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations). This indicator is set with 2010 as the base year (100) and measures price fluctuations in international markets for vegetable oils such as soybean oil, palm oil, and sunflower oil, as well as plant-based protein feeds (meals) such as soybean meal. It serves as an important barometer for understanding global agricultural commodity price trends.
There are multiple reasons why this indicator is considered important. First, vegetable oils are a major raw material for biofuels and have strong correlation with energy prices, reflecting trends in energy markets. Second, meals are basic components of livestock feed and directly affect prices of meat and dairy products. Furthermore, since vegetable oil is an important nutritional source in developing countries, increases in this index directly impact the lives of low-income populations through food inflation.
As a notable trend, production fluctuations in soybeans and palm oil due to climate change have become the primary factor in price volatility. Additionally, increased global meat demand has driven increased feed demand, and upward pressure on meal prices continues. Furthermore, changes in biofuel policies and political regulations also have major impacts on prices, making policy developments in various countries important areas for monitoring. Movements in this index are essential indicators for assessing inflation, food security, and stability in emerging economy economies.
