OECD Manufacturing New Orders Diffusion Index

# OECD Manufacturing New Orders Diffusion Index Explanation

The OECD Manufacturing New Orders Diffusion Index is a leading economic indicator that measures the trend of new order inflows among manufacturing enterprises in OECD member countries. Based on surveys of corporate executives using three response options—orders are "increasing," "unchanged," or "decreasing"—the difference between increases and decreases is expressed as a balance value. The Balance unit indicates an upward trend in orders when positive and a downward trend when negative.

This indicator is important because manufacturing order trends are an extremely crucial element that influences the overall economy's outlook. New orders directly lead to enterprises' future production activities and affect their decisions on capital investment and employment. In other words, understanding the current strength or weakness of new order inflows provides clues for predicting future economic growth rates, unemployment rates, and other variables several months ahead. In particular, the overall OECD trend reflects the comprehensive economic conditions of advanced economies and is widely used in international economic forecasting.

As a general trend, this indicator shows high correlation with the economic cycle. During periods of economic expansion, positive values expand, while during periods of economic contraction, it tends to turn negative. Additionally, it is highly sensitive to external shocks such as global supply chain disruptions or financial crises. A key point to note is the turning point of the balance value crossing zero, which serves as an important signal suggesting an economic turning point.
