Economic Overview of Tanzania
Tanzania Economic Profile
Tanzania is one of the promising economic powerhouses in Sub-Saharan Africa. With a GDP of approximately $415 billion in 2023, it ranks as the third-largest economy in Africa after Kenya and Uganda, with a young labor force of over 60 million people supporting economic growth.
In terms of economic composition, agriculture is the central industry, accounting for approximately 25% of GDP, with exports of agricultural products such as tobacco, cotton, coffee, and tea serving as important sources of foreign exchange. Simultaneously, the mining sector is also a pillar of the economy, known as a producer of gold, tanzanite, and diamonds. The gold mining sector is particularly important, accounting for approximately 3-4% of GDP, making Tanzania one of the largest gold-producing countries in the East African region. Financial services and tourism are also growing sectors, with natural resources such as Mount Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti attracting over one million tourists annually.
In terms of recent economic trends, Tanzania has achieved relatively steady economic growth of 4-5% annually on average, though inflationary pressures remain a challenge. The government has prioritized industrialization and export diversification, investing in infrastructure development, particularly port and railway projects. Membership in the East African Community (EAC) has also expanded intra-regional trade opportunities.
A notable point is natural gas development. Since 2017, a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project has been accelerating, with commercialization scheduled to begin in 2025, which has the potential to significantly increase foreign exchange earnings and government revenues. However, structural challenges remain, including weak power infrastructure, sluggish manufacturing, and the need for human capital development, making reform initiatives essential for sustained growth.
