São Tomé and Príncipe Economic Profile

São Tomé and Príncipe is a small island nation located in the Gulf of Guinea and one of the smallest countries in West Africa with a population of approximately 220,000. Although its economic scale is extremely limited with a GDP of around $600 million, it holds potential for future growth due to its abundant natural resources and geopolitical location.

The main industries are agriculture and the energy sector. Cocoa was once the primary industry and remains an important pillar of exports, though production levels have been declining. Meanwhile, in recent years, expectations have risen for marine resources, particularly the oil and gas sector. An offshore oil field was discovered in 2001, and petroleum exports have driven economic growth. However, excessive dependence of the national budget on oil has created a structural vulnerability in the economy to fluctuations in international oil prices.

As a recent economic trend, the decline in oil production is a serious challenge. The deterioration of existing oil fields and stagnation in new development projects have caused government revenues to plummet significantly. Simultaneously, rising inflation rates, downward pressure on currency, and increasing external debt burdens have been observed. The government has promoted economic diversification and is engaged in agricultural development and tourism projects, though insufficient infrastructure and limitations in human capital pose obstacles.

Notable points include the possibility of revitalizing the cocoa industry. High value-added can be achieved through branding as organic cocoa. Additionally, marine biodiversity and ecotourism are fields with significant development potential. Furthermore, national debt structural reform and strengthened fiscal discipline are urgent priorities, and enhanced cooperation with the IMF is critical.
