Economic Overview of Nicaragua
Nicaragua Economic Profile
Nicaragua is a lower-middle-income country located in Central America with a population of approximately 6.6 million. Its economic size is approximately $37 billion in GDP, making it a medium-sized economy within Central America. The economic structure heavily depends on the agricultural sector, with exports of agricultural products such as coffee, bananas, sugar, and cocoa serving as important means of acquiring foreign currency. The economy faces a structural challenge of being susceptible to international price fluctuations of these primary commodities.
In the manufacturing sector, the textile and apparel industry has developed, with exports to the United States being particularly important. The tourism industry, while not at Costa Rican levels, is gradually growing, with tourism development utilizing natural resources such as Lake Nicaragua progressing.
Regarding recent economic trends, political turmoil and social unrest in 2018 caused economic growth to decelerate significantly. Subsequently, the economy was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, with growth rates turning negative in 2020. As of 2023, the economy is in a gradual recovery phase, though challenges remain including inflation pressures and foreign currency shortages.
Notable points include the lack of political stability damaging the investment environment. Additionally, a serious migration problem exists throughout the Central American region, and the loss of human capital due to youth emigration has become a hindrance to economic development. Delays in infrastructure development and corruption issues require urgent improvement. Meanwhile, economic relations with China are being strengthened, with Nicaragua severing diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 2021 and establishing diplomatic ties with China, representing a geopolitical shift affecting the economy.
