Malawi Economic Profile

Malawi is a low-income country located in Sub-Saharan Africa and is one of the poorest nations on the African continent. With a population of approximately 19 million, its economic scale is limited with a GDP of roughly $11 billion. The country's economy is extremely dependent on agriculture, with the agricultural sector accounting for over 30% of GDP and approximately 75% of the labor force engaged in agriculture. The main agricultural products are cereals such as maize and tobacco. Tobacco in particular has historically been an important source of export income, accounting for 30-40% of agricultural exports.

Regarding recent economic trends, the country faces multiple structural challenges. Droughts and floods caused by climate change are destabilizing agricultural production, and food insecurity is becoming severe. From 2023 to 2024, macroeconomic imbalances are pronounced, with inflationary pressures, depreciation of the Malawi kwacha currency, and insufficient foreign exchange reserves afflicting the nation. A structural adjustment program in cooperation with the IMF is being implemented, but economic recovery is slow. Manufacturing is limited, centered mainly on agricultural processing and beverage industries.

Notable points include that power shortages are a major impediment to economic development. While the country utilizes Lake Malawi for hydroelectric power generation, aging infrastructure and maintenance issues are destabilizing power supply. Investment in human capital development is progressing, but resource shortages in education and health sectors remain unresolved. Additionally, high youth unemployment rates and dependence on the informal sector pose employment creation challenges. High reliance on international assistance and external debt management are also important issues.
