Eurostat Retail Sales Index

The Eurostat retail sales index is an important economic indicator that measures changes in retail sales across the eurozone and EU member states. Set with 2015 as the base year (100), it expresses in index form how much retail sales have increased or decreased compared to this baseline. This index includes sales volumes of various goods purchased by consumers, including food, clothing, electronics, and furniture, and is measured on a volume basis, allowing assessment of real sales trends excluding the impact of price changes.

This indicator is important for several reasons. First, retail sales serve as a leading indicator reflecting consumer purchasing power and the health of the overall economy. Because consumer spending accounts for approximately 50-60% of eurozone GDP, changes in retail sales are extremely important in predicting economic growth rates. Second, it serves as a basis for judgment when central banks and policymakers consider interest rate setting and inflation control measures. As a recent trend, following the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, rapid growth in online sales has brought about dramatic changes in consumption patterns. Currently, influenced by interest rate increases as inflation countermeasures and cost-of-living crises, retail sales show increased volatility. In particular, there is a tendency to react sensitively to fluctuations in energy and food prices, with the movements of seasonally adjusted monthly data closely monitored by policy authorities and investors.
