Economic Overview of Myanmar

Myanmar Economic Profile

Myanmar is a lower-middle-income country in Southeast Asia with a population of approximately 54 million. The economic scale is approximately $70 billion in GDP, with agriculture, natural gas, and mineral resources forming the foundation of the economy. The agricultural sector accounts for approximately 25-30% of gross domestic product, with rice cultivation being the primary industry supporting rural employment. Natural gas is a major export commodity and an important source of government revenue. Simultaneously, natural resources such as jade and rubies gemstones and timber also contribute significantly to the economy.

Myanmar's economy has experienced significant fluctuations following the 2021 coup. Political turmoil has reduced foreign direct investment and resulted in sharply declining economic growth rates. During the democratization period from 2015 to 2020, growth rates of 4-6% annually were achieved, but post-coup the economy has faced stagnation in economic activity and rising inflationary pressures. The sharp decline of the Myanmar Kyat currency has also accelerated inflation, placing significant pressure on the common people's livelihoods.

Notable points include that Myanmar occupies a geopolitically important position in the Indo-Pacific region, with high economic interest from major powers such as China and India. Political stability and restoration of democratic order are key to attracting foreign investment and resuming economic growth. Additionally, abundant labor and a young population composition are sources of long-term growth potential, but improvements in educational infrastructure and human resource development remain challenges. Regional economic integration and Myanmar's role within the ASEAN framework will also be important factors for future economic development.
