Economic Overview of Moldova

Republic of Moldova Economic Profile

Moldova is a small-scale economy located in Eastern Europe with a nominal GDP of around $20 billion in 2023. Despite its geopolitically difficult position between Romania and Ukraine, it functions as an upper-middle-income country. While limited in economic scale, it has an industrial structure centered on agriculture and food processing.

The main industry is grape cultivation and wine production, with Moldova known as a wine superpower, wine accounting for approximately 20% of exports. Other important sectors include grain production, meat processing, and the textile industry. The agricultural sector accounts for approximately 30% of domestic employment, supporting the rural economy. Recently, development of the IT industry has attracted attention, with technology companies receiving foreign investment centered around the capital Chișinău showing increases.

Regarding recent economic trends, the profound impact of the Ukraine crisis is characteristic. Since 2022, interruption of energy supply from Russia has caused an electricity crisis, with inflation accelerating rapidly. Simultaneously, the influx of refugees from Ukraine has placed pressure on social services. Orientation toward EU integration is strong, with Moldova becoming an EU candidate country in 2022, advancing economic reform and governance strengthening.

Notable points include the low energy self-sufficiency rate, which is the root of Moldova's economic vulnerability. High dependence on natural gas from Russia directly relates to geopolitical risk. Conversely, institutional reform through the EU integration process improves the investment environment, with focus on developing young IT talent expected to drive economic diversification. Anti-corruption measures and establishment of the rule of law will be keys to sustainable economic growth in the future.
