Economic Overview of Kuwait

Kuwait Economic Profile

Kuwait is a high-income country located in the Middle East's Gulf region, with an economic structure supported by petroleum resources. The country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is on the scale of approximately $180 billion, boasting one of the largest economies among Middle Eastern nations. The country's economy is heavily dependent on the oil and gas industry, with approximately 90% of revenues derived from petroleum-related sources. With some of the world's largest proven reserves, Kuwait holds an important position as a major oil exporter in international markets.

Kuwait's economy in recent years has been significantly affected by fluctuations in international oil prices. Following oil price increases from 2022 onward, national finances have shown improvement trends. However, long-term economic diversification away from oil dependency remains a challenge. The government is advancing the "Kuwait Vision 2035" economic diversification plan, targeting growth in non-oil sectors. Particular focus is placed on developing industries such as energy, financial services, tourism, and real estate development.

Notable points include high defense-related expenditures and the high living standards of the population with comprehensive social security systems, resulting in extremely low unemployment rates. However, limited employment opportunities for youth represent a structural challenge. Furthermore, public sector inefficiency and delays in privatization hinder economic development. As a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), regional integration and strengthened economic relations with neighboring countries such as Saudi Arabia are important. Going forward, recognizing the finite nature of petroleum resources and establishing a sustainable economic foundation will be the key determining Kuwait's long-term prosperity.
