Economic Overview of Greece

Greek Economic Profile

Greece is located in southeastern Europe and is a member of the European Union and the Eurozone. With a population of approximately 10.5 million, it is a high-income country and serves as an important economic and cultural hub in the Mediterranean region. Its economic scale, with a GDP of around $220 billion, represents a medium-sized economy within Europe.

The main industries of the Greek economy are tourism, shipping, and agriculture. Tourism is particularly crucial to the economy, accounting for approximately 20% of GDP, with over 15 million tourists visiting islands such as Santorini and Crete annually. The shipping industry has traditionally been a strength, with Greece being known as one of the world's largest shipping nations. Energy, manufacturing, and financial services also constitute major economic sectors.

Regarding recent economic trends, recovery from the 2009 debt crisis has continued. From 2010 to 2015, the country faced a severe economic crisis, but through international support and structural reform efforts by the Greek government, gradual growth has been achieved since 2016. The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic dealt a significant blow to the tourism sector, but recovery since 2021 has been relatively swift. Inflationary pressures and labor market challenges continue.

Notable points include persistently high government debt levels. The debt-to-GDP ratio stands at approximately 170%, among the highest in Europe. Unemployment, particularly youth unemployment, remains a challenge. On the other hand, increased investment in renewable energy and digital transformation initiatives are advancing economic diversification and decarbonization efforts, with economic revival expected through the use of EU funds.
