Economic Overview of The Gambia
The Gambian Economic Profile
The Gambia is the smallest country in West Africa, occupying a unique geopolitical position surrounded by Senegal. With a population of approximately 2.4 million and a GDP of around $3.9 billion, it is classified as a low-income country. While the economic scale is limited, the country is characterized by maintaining a relatively stable political environment within Africa.
The economic structure is supported by three pillars: agriculture, tourism, and fishing. Approximately 40% of the population is engaged in agriculture, with peanut production serving as the primary cash crop. However, the agricultural sector remains vulnerable, heavily dependent on climate change and rice price fluctuations. Tourism is an important source of foreign exchange, with the wetlands along the Gambia River and colonial architecture in the capital Banjul functioning as tourist destinations. Fishing resources, on the other hand, are shared with Senegal, and regional cooperation regarding fishing rights remains a challenge.
Regarding recent economic trends, economic growth has slowed due to a failed coup attempt in 2022 and political instability. Subsequently, from 2023 to 2024, the economy has shown signs of recovery, with IMF support programs continuing. However, structural issues remain, including insufficient foreign exchange reserves and persistent inflationary pressures.
As a notable point, The Gambia is considering membership in the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU), with expectations for deepening regional economic integration. While it has the potential to function as a commercial hub, the establishment of good relations with neighboring Senegal is key to economic development. Additionally, addressing climate change mitigation, population growth, and youth unemployment are long-term development challenges.
