Gabon Economic Profile

Gabon is classified as an upper-middle-income country in sub-Saharan Africa with an economic scale of approximately $20 billion. Located in the west-central region of the African continent, with a population of approximately 2.3 million, it is relatively small by regional standards. The most distinctive characteristic of the economy is its high dependence on the petroleum industry, with oil accounting for approximately 70-80% of export revenues. Since independence in 1960, Gabon has maintained a higher income level compared to neighboring countries through petroleum resource development. The timber industry is also an important export sector, with resource extraction industries backed by tropical forests supporting the economy.

Gabon's economy has faced major challenges in recent years. The vulnerability of an economic structure overly dependent on international oil price fluctuations has become evident, and since the 2014 oil price decline, economic growth has stagnated. Growth rates since 2023 have remained in the range of 1-2%, with the high growth of the past becoming history. Expanding fiscal deficits and rising debt levels have also intensified, necessitating the maintenance of cooperative relationships with the International Monetary Fund. High unemployment rates, particularly among youth, pose risk factors for social instability.

Notable points include the rapidly increasing necessity for economic diversification. Aiming to escape oil dependency, the policy objectives include the development of agriculture, tourism, and renewable energy industries. Additionally, progress in regional integration as a member of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) is important. However, improving structural constraints such as inadequate infrastructure, lagging human capital development, and political stability issues remain key to economic revitalization.
