Economic Overview of Finland

Finland Economic Profile

Finland is a high-income country located in Northern Europe with a population of approximately 5.5 million. With a GDP of approximately 380 billion euros in 2023, it possesses a highly developed economic structure as an advanced industrial nation. Traditionally, the paper and pulp industry based on forest resources was the main industry, but currently the information and communication technology (ICT) sector has become the center of the economy, with telecommunications equipment manufacturers such as Nokia and the gaming industry possessing international competitiveness.

Regarding recent economic trends, Finland is prioritizing digitalization and green transformation. NATO membership was completed in 2024, increasing geopolitical stability. However, economic sanctions accompanying Russia's invasion of Ukraine and sharp rises in energy prices caused economic growth to slow from 2022 to 2023. Inflation rates were at high levels, but gradual moderation is expected toward 2024.

Notable points include the following: First, high education levels and high labor productivity stand out. Finland has globally high education ratings, possesses a developed startup ecosystem, and is making progress in innovation in AI technology and biotechnology fields. Second, strong commitment to carbon-neutral policies is a characteristic, with a high ratio of renewable energy and targeting achievement of carbon neutrality by 2035. Third, a balanced economic model is maintained through Nordic-style high tax rates and a comprehensive social security system.
