Economic Overview of Spain

Spain Economic Profile

Spain is a high-income country with the fourth-largest economy in the Eurozone, with nominal GDP reaching approximately $1.4 trillion in 2023. The economy is characterized by a diversified industrial structure, with tourism, manufacturing, agriculture, and services developing in a balanced manner. In particular, the tourism industry is an important source of foreign exchange earnings, receiving over 80 million international tourists annually.

As a recent economic trend, Spain is in a post-pandemic recovery period, achieving steady growth from 2023 into 2024. The unemployment rate is declining gradually, and the labor market shows improvement. Meanwhile, inflation pressures have become a challenge for the entire Eurozone, and Spain is also affected by rising energy prices. The government is strengthening investments in green industrial revolution and digitalization, promoting structural reforms utilizing EU recovery funds.

Notable points include the following: First, economic disparities between regions still exist, and development in southern regions remains an issue. Second, the transition to renewable energy is progressing rapidly, with solar power generation capacity increasing significantly. Third, strengthening the international competitiveness of Spanish companies and fostering startups particularly in the technology field have become important policy issues.
