Economic Overview of Armenia

Armenia Economic Profile

Armenia is an upper-middle-income country located in the South Caucasus region with a population of approximately 3 million, representing a small economic sphere. The gross domestic product (GDP) is on the scale of approximately $16 billion, making it the second-largest economy in the region after Georgia. The economy is dependent on the mining, agriculture, and information and communication technology (ICT) sectors, with the extraction of mineral resources such as copper and molybdenum being particularly important sources of foreign currency. Additionally, cognac production and diamond processing are characteristic industries.

Armenia's economy in recent years has been affected by complex geopolitical circumstances. Following the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, military clashes occurred again in 2022, causing economic growth rates to fluctuate. However, from 2023 to 2024, the de-escalation of conflict and progress in regional integration have shown the economy recovering. In particular, the reconstruction of economic interdependence with Russia and the development of new trade routes via Iran are underway.

A notable point is the rapid development of Armenia's ICT industry. So concentrated are software development companies and IT talent that it is called the "Silicon Valley of the Caucasus," and it has become an important part of export earnings. Additionally, as a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, regional integration is progressing, while at the same time strengthening relations with the EU and the United States is being explored. Debt levels and inflation management remain ongoing challenges, but the potential for medium-term growth exists through structural reforms and diversification strategies.
