About Cboe SPX Put/Call Ratio

Cboe SPX Put/Call Ratio Explanation

The Cboe SPX Put/Call Ratio is an indicator that shows the trading volume ratio between put options (the right to sell) and call options (the right to buy) in S&P 500 Index options trading. Specifically, it is calculated by dividing the trading volume of put options by the trading volume of call options for a specific period. Through this ratio, one can quantitatively understand the degree of bullish and bearish sentiment among market participants.

The reason this indicator is considered important lies in its essential reflection of market psychology. Since put options serve the role of downside protection, an increase in put buying suggests that market participants are concerned about downside risks. Conversely, an increase in call option buying indicates strengthening upside expectations. Because a higher Put/Call ratio suggests a bearish market while a lower ratio suggests a bullish market, it is often utilized as a contrarian signal.

As a general trend, when the ratio reaches a level significantly exceeding 1.0 (for example, 1.5 or above), there is a possibility that excessive pessimism has created a buying opportunity. Conversely, at low levels of 0.5 or below, it can be judged as a phase where bullish sentiment has become overheated. However, since it is easily influenced by short-term market fluctuations, combining it with other indicators and long-term trend analysis leads to more reliable investment decisions.
