BLS JOLTS Voluntary Quits Rate

BLS JOLTS Voluntary Quits Rate

The BLS JOLTS voluntary quits rate is an indicator included in the "Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey" (JOLTS) published monthly by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. It shows the percentage of employed workers who voluntarily quit their jobs. Specifically, it is calculated as the ratio of voluntary separations to total employment in the previous month.

This indicator is considered important because it serves as a leading indicator reflecting labor market health and overall economic trends. An increase in workers voluntarily quitting their jobs suggests that the labor market is tightening, and workers have the flexibility to seek better positions with higher wages or improved working conditions. Conversely, a decline in quits indicates workers tend to remain in their positions due to unemployment anxiety from economic deterioration. This indicator is also used in assessing inflation pressures, as increased quits and tighter labor supply can lead to wage pressure.

As a general trend, the voluntary quits rate rises during economic booms and falls during recessions. From 2021 to 2022, the U.S. experienced a wave of significant job separations, drawing attention to the phenomenon known as the "Great Resignation." The high quits rate during this period influenced the Federal Reserve's decision to raise interest rates for inflation control. Notably, a normal level is considered around 2.5-3% annually; rates significantly exceeding this level suggest excessive labor market tightening, while rates below this level suggest economic weakness.
