On Algeria's Population Composition

Explanation of Algeria's Population Pyramid

Algeria's population composition exhibits a typical "young-type pyramid," with over approximately 30% of the total population consisting of youth under 15 years of age. The characteristic shape, with a broad base that narrows toward the top, reflects high birth rates and a young median age. The median age is around 30 years, clearly indicating a younger population structure compared to developed countries.

Algeria is currently in a "demographic bonus period." The working-age population (15-64 years) comprises a large proportion of the total, suggesting significant potential for economic growth. However, the birth rate shows a gradual declining trend, with declining fertility rates accompanying urbanization and rising education levels. Conversely, declining mortality rates maintain a high natural increase rate, and the population continues to grow rapidly.

This population composition has major impacts on society and economy. The rapid increase in youth creates extremely high demand for educational facilities and employment opportunities, making the suppression of unemployment, particularly youth unemployment, a critical issue. The development of medical and housing infrastructure is also urgent. Simultaneously, this abundant labor force, if properly utilized, could serve as a driving force for economic development. The adjustment of population policy and economic development has become a national priority.
