On the Population Composition of Cabo Verde

Population Pyramid and Demographic Dynamics of Cabo Verde

Cabo Verde is a developing country exhibiting a typical young population structure. Approximately 40% of the total population is under 15 years old, making a very young demographic layer a defining characteristic of the country. The shape of the pyramid, with a wide base that narrows sharply toward the top, reflects a structure characterized by high birth rates and relatively low life expectancy.

In terms of demographic dynamics, Cabo Verde is currently in the stage of demographic dividend. The working-age population (15-64 years), which constitutes the labor force, is increasing rapidly, and with appropriate policy implementation, this could become an opportunity for economic growth. However, while the birth rate shows a gradual declining trend, it remains at relatively high levels.

This young population structure has significant social and economic implications. Positively, the increase in the labor force enhances the potential for economic development. However, challenges are substantial, and providing adequate educational and employment opportunities for the rapidly growing population is urgent. Moreover, concerns about rising youth unemployment and pressure for labor migration abroad persist due to a limited industrial base centered on agriculture and tourism. Additionally, there is a need to rapidly advance health and sanitation infrastructure development.
