Comoros Population Pyramid and Demographic Dynamics

Comoros is an island nation located in the western Indian Ocean in Africa and exhibits a typical youth-type population composition. The population pyramid has an extremely broad base, with children under 15 years of age accounting for over 40% of the total population, while elderly people (aged 65 and above) represent merely approximately 3%. This structure is a characteristic shared by many countries south of the Sahara.

In terms of demographic dynamics, the total fertility rate remains at a high level exceeding 4.0, with rapid population growth continuing. While the mortality rate shows a declining trend, the decline in birth rate is gradual, so the "demographic dividend period" is expected to continue for decades to come. During this period, the working-age population increases, presenting potential economic growth opportunities.

However, serious challenges also exist in the social and economic spheres. Rapid population increase has led to limited employment opportunities, insufficient education and healthcare facilities, and expanded poverty. In particular, the rise in youth unemployment rates is severe, with many young people forced to migrate abroad. Additionally, the high birth rate suggests that improving access to family planning services and expanding women's education are urgent priorities, and investment in human capital is essential for sustainable development.
