On the Population Composition of Colombia

Population Pyramid Analysis of Colombia

Colombia's population composition exhibits "youth-type" characteristics, with children under 15 years of age and the working-age population (15-64 years) constituting the vast majority of the total. The pyramid displays a typical developing country pattern with a broad base that gradually narrows toward the top, while the proportion of elderly population (aged 65 and above) remains limited.

In terms of demographic dynamics, Colombia is experiencing a "demographic dividend period." While birth rates have shown a declining trend over the past several decades, they remain higher than in developed countries, and the working-age population is increasing rapidly. This period is considered favorable for economic growth, as the productive population exceeds the dependent population. However, the declining birth rate trend is progressing, and the population structure is expected to gradually age in the future.

Socioeconomically, this population structure presents both opportunities and challenges. The abundance of labor supply has the potential to promote economic growth; simultaneously, securing employment opportunities for young people, enhancing education and healthcare services, and preparing pension systems for the future are urgent priorities. Whether Colombia can effectively utilize the demographic dividend will be a critical factor determining the country's medium-term economic development.
