Bhutan's Population Composition

Characteristics and Future Prospects of Bhutan's Population Pyramid

Bhutan exhibits a typical "young-type population structure," with youth under 15 years of age comprising approximately 25-30% of the population. The pyramid is characterized by a wide base that narrows toward the top, a population composition pattern observed in developing countries. This country has experienced rapid population growth over the past several decades.

Bhutan is currently considered to be in a "demographic dividend period." The proportion of the working-age population (15-64 years) is high, and the elderly dependency ratio remains relatively low. This can become an opportunity for economic growth, and with appropriate policies, improvements in productivity and economic development can be realized during this period. However, fertility rates show a gradual declining trend, and changes in population structure are anticipated in the future.

In social and economic terms, this youth population composition brings increased labor supply and enhances economic growth potential. Simultaneously, however, responses to increased demand for public services such as education, employment, and healthcare are necessary. While progressing the economic transition from agriculture-centered activities, developing high-quality human capital is an urgent task. This is a critical period that will determine future social development.
