CSVBarbados' Population Composition
Barbados' Population Pyramid and Demographic Trends
Barbados' population composition exhibits characteristics of transition from a mature to an aged-type structure. The pyramid's shape clearly shows a declining proportion of youth and a relatively thickening middle-aged population. Notably, the proportion of the working-age population (15-64 years) is high, while the youth population (0-14 years) shows a marked decline.
Behind such a population structure lies the progress of declining fertility in the Caribbean region. Because Barbados possesses a relatively high level of economic development and widespread education, fertility rates have declined and the average age of childbearing has increased through family planning programs. Simultaneously, improved healthcare levels have extended life expectancy, leading to an increase in the elderly population.
This demographic trend means the country has passed the period of the former "demographic dividend" and now faces the "demographic burden" (population onus). The decrease in the working population and the increase in elderly dependency burden will intensify pressure on social security and pension systems. Additionally, economic challenges such as labor shortages, slower economic growth rates, and increased healthcare and long-term care costs are anticipated.
To respond to such changes in population structure, Barbados is at a stage where multifaceted measures are required, including reviewing immigration policies, expanding women's labor force participation, and supporting continued employment of the elderly.
