Brazil's Population Composition

Brazil's Population Pyramid and Demographic Trends

Brazil's population composition is in a transitional period from a "young-type" to a "mature-type" structure. Looking at the pyramid's shape, while the 0-14 age group remains relatively substantial, it is clearly narrower compared to the typical young-type pyramid of the past, clearly indicating that demographic transition toward developed nations is underway. The current median age is approximately 33-34 years, representing a medium level within the Latin American region.

In terms of demographic trends, rapid declining fertility is progressing. The total fertility rate has declined significantly from 6.3 in the 1970s to approximately 1.6-1.7 at present. The primary factors include rapid urbanization, increased educational attainment and labor force participation among women, and widespread contraceptive use. Simultaneously, life expectancy has extended markedly, reaching approximately 76 years. Brazil has essentially completed its former "demographic dividend period" and is now entering a phase of aging society.

This change in population structure brings complex impacts on the socioeconomy. While the pace of increase in the working-age population slows, the rising costs of healthcare and long-term care for the elderly will increase the burden on public pension systems. At the same time, the relative shrinkage of the working-age population may lead to declining economic growth rates. Brazil will face the important policy challenge of responding to aging and improving productivity of the labor force, rather than addressing population decline in the future.
