Benin's population pyramid and demographic trends

Benin exhibits a typical "young-type population structure." The base of the pyramid is extremely wide, with the young population aged 0-14 accounting for approximately 45% of the total population. This reflects high fertility rates and declining death rates, characteristics shared by many Sub-Saharan African countries.

In terms of demographic dynamics, Benin is in a phase of rapid population growth. The total fertility rate exceeds approximately 5, and life expectancy is gradually increasing, placing it in a typical "demographic dividend" stage. During this period, the working-age population is relatively large compared to the dependent population, creating potential opportunities for economic growth.

Conversely, the impact on society and the economy is complex. The rapid increase in youth population creates growing demands for education and employment, but inadequate infrastructure and resources become constraints. In particular, combined with structural problems such as rural poverty, limited industrial base, and insufficient education and healthcare systems, the risks of unemployment and underemployment increase.
