Armenia's Population Composition

Armenia's Population Pyramid and Demographic Trends

Armenia's population composition exhibits a typical pattern of transition from "mature type" to "aging type," characterized by a declining proportion of youth and an increasing proportion of middle-aged and older populations. The shape of the pyramid is approaching an inverted triangle with a narrow base and widening top, clearly indicating the progression of declining birth rates and population aging.

As demographic trends, Armenia faces marked population decline and aging. Due to declining birth rates and high emigration rates, particularly among working-age youth migrating abroad, Armenia has already passed the demographic dividend stage and entered the demographic onus phase, characterized by increased economic burden from population decline. Ethnic conflicts and economic instability in the 1990s also accelerated population outflows.

These demographic trends have severe impacts on society and the economy. The decline in the working-age population and rising proportion of elderly people increase social security burdens such as pensions and healthcare costs, while making tax revenue collection difficult. Additionally, the outflow of youth to foreign countries reduces domestic consumer demand and represents a loss of human capital, becoming a major impediment to economic growth. In the future, addressing population decline and promoting the retention of young people will become critical policy issues for Armenia.
