Month-over-Month Personal Consumption Consensus
Month-over-Month Personal Consumption Consensus
The month-over-month personal consumption consensus is an indicator that shows the average of forecasts made by economists and analysts regarding the rate of change in personal consumption expenditures compared to the previous month. It measures how much consumers spend on goods and services, expressed as a percentage. For example, if the consensus is 0.5%, it means experts expect personal consumption to increase by 0.5% compared to the previous month.
There are many reasons why this indicator is important. Personal consumption constitutes approximately 60-70% of GDP in most developed countries and serves as a critical barometer of overall economic health. When consumption increases, corporate sales tend to rise and employment is created. Conversely, when consumption decreases, there is a risk of recession and increased unemployment. Additionally, it is used as a basis for central bank monetary policy decisions and inflation countermeasure judgments.
As a general trend, personal consumption fluctuates in line with the economic cycle. During economic expansion phases, consumption tends to increase, while during contraction phases, it tends to decrease. A particularly important point to note is the divergence between actual published figures and consensus forecasts. Results that exceed expectations suggest the economy is performing better than anticipated, while those falling short may raise concerns about economic slowdown. Seasonal adjustments and external shocks (interest rate increases, changes in unemployment rates, price inflation, etc.) also have significant impacts on consumption trends, necessitating continuous monitoring.
